I joined my local YMCA today!

I'm planning on doing three 5k's his year with my girlfriend. While they are all fun runs and not at all serious, I wanted to be able to at least finish them without putting myself in the hospital. I'm not exactly the healthiest person on the planet. I haven't been doing any real exercise since I graduated high school last year. So I want to start slow, of course. I'm excited. Not only will I hopefully feel better, it'll give me something to do after work.

Good for you! I started working out seriously middle of last year and I feel absolutely great. I have a lot more confidence, I sleep better, I think better, my clothes fit better, everything is better. I highly recommend working out and building strength. It is one of the best things I started doing last year.

I'm going to try and do a little bit of everything, but focus mostly on running. I just need to make sure I stick with it. A lot of people are encouraging me so I can't quit now!

I find the best way to stick with it is to have a specific measurable goal and a partner to work out with. While "being able to finish without putting myself in the hospital" is a good starting point, I suggest making it more specific. Maybe something like:

Finish 1st 5k in 30 minutes - start training for a 10 minute mile.

Finish 2nd 5k in 24 minutes - start training for a 8 minute mile.

Finish 3rd 5k in 21 minutes - 7 minute mile.

As for a partner just bring your girlfriend, easy. My girlfriend is what got me into working out last year. She can still out deadlift me as a percentage of body weight.

Also I have to add that in my experience when it comes to training for runs, running on a treadmill does not really simulate the difficulty of a true "run around the city" 5k or marathon. It is just too monotonous compared to the elevation changes, temperature changes, and obstacles you will encounter in a 5k. If your YMCA has an indoor track do that over the treadmill or just run around your neighborhood. It will be harder, but it closer to what you will experience in a 5k.

Once the weather is nicer I do plan on running more outside- especially at the lake where we camp at a ton over the summer.

For a partner, my girl is thinking about it but I don't think she will just yet. There is another kid at work thinking about it and he will most likely do at least one 5k with us so he and I might end up working out together.
